PhD aims

This PhD project aims at developing new archaeometric methodologies for the study of textiles from Ancient Egypt. Textiles are abundantly excavated from archaeological sites in Egypt and could possibly be used as time-based marker (proxy) when found in very well documented archaeological contexts. However, due to their function, they are sometimes impregnated with organic materials, such as mummification balms or waterproofing agents. These compounds are likely to bias the radiocarbon dating of the textile, especially when fossil substances (such as bitumen for instance) are present. This project focuses on identifying textiles and impregnated products (relying of infrared spectroscopy and GC-MS characterization), developing extraction procedures to "clean" the textile and on integrating these textiles to new chronological models for Ancient Egypt.
